About us

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, partnering Industry, Government and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes. CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, with around 9000 members from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from 286 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
For more than 125 years, CII has been engaged in shaping India’s development journey and works proactively on transforming Indian Industry’s engagement in national development. CII charts change by working closely with Government on policy issues, interfacing with thought leaders, and enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and business opportunities for industry through a range of specialized services and strategic global linkages. It also provides a platform for consensus-building and networking on key issues.
Extending its agenda beyond business, CII assists industry to identify and execute corporate citizenship programmes. Partnerships with civil society organizations carry forward corporate initiatives for integrated and inclusive development across diverse domains including affirmative action, livelihoods, diversity management, skill development, empowerment of women, and sustainable development, to name a few.
As India completes 75 years of Independence in 2022, it must position itself for global leadership with a long-term vision for India@100 in 2047. The role played by Indian industry will be central to the country’s progress and success as a nation. CII, with the Theme for 2022-23 as Beyond India@75: Competitiveness, Growth, Sustainability, Internationalisation has prioritized 7 action points under these 4 sub-themes that will catalyze the journey of the country towards the vision of India@100. With 62 offices, including 10 Centres of Excellence, in India, and 8 overseas offices in Australia, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, UAE, UK, and USA, as well as institutional partnerships with 350 counterpart organizations in 133 countries, CII serves as a reference point for Indian industry and the international business community.
Water is one of the key priority areas for CII and we have a specialised Centre of Excellence on water – CII Water Institute – which is deeply engaged in providing expert advisory services to help India achieve Water Security.
One among CII’s 10 acclaimed Centres of Excellence, CII Water Institute is a unique institution where government, industry and civil society have partnered to address water related issues in a holistic manner. Guided by an Advisory Board comprising members of national and international repute, the Institute has developed strong internal governance mechanisms that provide clear directions to its operations, partnership development and management.
CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit, industry-led institution that helps business become sustainable organisations. It is on a mission to catalyse innovative ideas and solutions, in India, and globally, to enable business, and its stakeholders, in sustainable value creation. It’s knowledge, action and recognition activities enable companies to be future ready, improve footprints profiles, and advocate policymakers and legislators to improve standards of sustainable business through domestic and global policy interventions.
CESD leverages its role of all-inclusive ecosystem player, partnering industry, government, and civil society. It has been a pioneer of environment management systems, biodiversity mapping, sustainability reporting, integrated reporting, and social & natural capital valuation in India, thus upgrading business in India to sustainable competitiveness.
CESD operates across the country and has also been active in parts of South and South East Asia, Middle East, and Africa. It has held institutional partnerships and memberships of the United Nations Global Compact, Global Reporting Initiative, International Integrated Reporting Council, Carbon Disclosure Project, development agencies of Canada, the USA, the UK, and Germany.

IGBC

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)

IGBC was formed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2001. The council is based out of the CII-Sohrabji Green Business Centre, Hyderabad which is India’s 1st Platinum rated green building and a Net Zero Energy Building. The vision of the council is to enable a ‘Sustainable built environment for all.
IGBC is India’s premier body for green building certification and related services. Today, with strong support from various stakeholders, IGBC is India’s premier body for green building certification and related services, and they have achieved the following:
  • 8,699+projects registered with IGBC from various parts of India and abroad, amounting to a total footprint of 9.75 billion square feet.
  • 31 IGBC Green and Net Zero Building Ratings that cover all typologies of projects – residential, commercial, industrial, healthcare, etc.
  • 1,500+ IGBC Member Organizations comprising developers, corporates, architects, consultants, institutes, government, etc.
  • 6,300+ qualified IGBC Accredited Green Building Professionals; more than 30,000 stakeholders have been trained by IGBC till date.
